Grading for Under 12s, Under 14s and Under 16s
We would like to share some important information regarding our junior development pathway and the introduction of player grading within our competitive junior teams.

This approach is being guided by our club values of Family, Inclusivity, Respect, Excellence, Integrity and Accountability, and is designed to support the long-term development of our players and the overall success of the club.

Why grading?

Our goal is not to create a “win at all costs” environment. Instead, we believe that by focusing on developing technically sound players in appropriate competitive environments, positive results will naturally follow.

In recent seasons, we have seen increasing disparities between teams, with some dominating while others struggle for competitiveness or numbers. Introducing grading allows us to:

-
Place players in environments best suited to their current stage of development (Excellence)
-
Create fairer and more enjoyable competitions for all players (Respect)
-
Reduce situations where teams are over-stacked while others are under-resourced (Accountability)
How grading aligns with our club values

-
Family: We remain committed to providing a safe, welcoming and enjoyable environment. Where possible, we will apply flexibility to keep friendship groups together while still supporting player development.
-
Inclusivity: Grading is about opportunity, not exclusion. Every player has a place at our club, regardless of ability, background or experience.
-
Respect: Players will be assessed fairly, thoughtfully and transparently, with respect for each individual and their journey.
-
Excellence: Appropriate challenge is essential for learning. Grading helps ensure players are neither under-challenged nor overwhelmed.
-
Integrity & Accountability: We aim to be proactive and honest in how teams are formed, rather than reacting later in the season.
Football Victoria considerations

Football Victoria has also indicated a shift toward expecting clubs to self-assess team levels more accurately. If a team is clearly too strong or struggling significantly, FV will regrade teams during the early part of the season. By grading thoughtfully from the outset, we place ourselves in the strongest position and minimise disruption for players and families.

What happens next?

We plan to run structured grading sessions across the following two nights:

These sessions will help us form balanced teams and provide clarity before the season begins. We understand that grading can be challenging and may not suit everyone’s expectations, however it is a step we believe is necessary to support player development and the long-term success of the club.

We thank you for your continued support and trust. Our focus remains on creating an environment where players enjoy their football, develop their skills, and feel connected to their teammates and the club.
